49ers keep O-line, will draft depth

With the agreement that veteran guard Jon Feliciano would stay for what he called a "last ride," the 49ers were able to secure the return of their five top offensive linemen. The team scored 491 points and accumulated 6,773 yards.

Trent Williams (left tackle), Aaron Banks (left guard), Jake Brendel (center), Feliciano (right guard), and Colton McKivitz (right tackle) are the top offensive linemen the 49ers have under contract for 2024.

Even with the forthcoming draft, San Francisco is likely to want to bolster their right side of the line with more competition or depth. The 49ers may try to address the tackle, guard, and center positions with the 31st overall pick in the next draft.

Pro Football Focus ranked the 49ers' offensive line as the third best in the NFL last season. The 49ers' offensive line was ranked ninth in the league, with a nod for fourth-best run-blocking, according to the football analytics site.

Christian McCaffrey rushed for 1,459 yards, over 300 more than Derrick Henry, the runner-up in the league. The 49ers' 34 sacks allowed ranked them eighth in the league. Sam Darnold, the backup quarterback, saw limited action and recorded six of those sacks.

Quarterback Brock Purdy established a new franchise mark with 4,280 passing yards. He also topped the NFL in passing efficiency with 113.0 yards per attempt and 9.6 yards per throw. The 49ers' 25-22 Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs was a major miscue, even though Purdy was sacked only four times in the three playoff games.

After Feliciano's injury caused him to exit the game, the team's starting right guard, Spencer Burford, was thrust back into play. During the 49ers' third-and-4 play in overtime, which was initiated from the 9-yard line, Burford failed to block Chris Jones, the standout defensive lineman for Kansas City.

When Purdy attempted to throw the ball to Jauan Jennings while under duress, he missed the mark. In the end, the 49ers kicked a short field goal. After that, Kansas City's game-winning drive was led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Based on PFF's rankings, the Chiefs' offensive line was the thirteenth best in the league. The best offensive line according to PFF was on display for the Detroit Lions.
