Coming in 2025, the Mazda CX-70

Mazda's new CX-70 and year-old CX-90 mid-size SUVs resemble Jeep's Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L. The two-row CX-70 seats five, while the three-row CX-90 seats eight. The CX-70 is a virtual twin to the CX-90, but without the rearmost row of seats, therefore Mazda's decision to sell two nameplates is odd. (The Grand Cherokee L has a longer wheelbase.)

Additionally, the CX-70 shares its sibling's inline-six and plug-in-hybrid powertrains, with the only differences being interior and exterior customization options and a reorganized cargo compartment. The CX-70 should be as opulent and polished as the CX-90. We don't understand why it's marketed as a distinct model when the two are identical save for seat count.

Although the CX-70 is new to Mazda for 2025, it is practically the same as the CX-90 from last year. Blacked-out trim and new wheels distinguish the CX-70. Mazda is adding Amazon Alexa connectivity and freight underfloor storage.

The 2025 Mazda CX-70 costs $41,820 to $57,325 depending on model and extras.

All nonhybrid CX-70s use a turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine with 280 horsepower base and 340 horsepower S grades. In the CX-90, this powerplant is powerful and smooth, but the eight-speed automatic sometimes resists steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Since they share a platform, we expect the CX-70 and CX-90 to drive similarly when we get to drive them. There may be minor suspension tuning variations.

The CX-70 should perform similarly to the CX-90 due to its turbocharged 3.3-liter inline-six engine. Our CX-90 Turbo S Premium Plus reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, and the CX-70 may be faster because to its smaller weight. The CX-90's 280-hp engine has yet to be tested, and we assess the CX-70 Hybrid separately.

Since the CX-90's fuel-economy figures are available, we can estimate the CX-70's. It gets 25 mpg overall. If you want a more fuel-efficient CX-70, consider the plug-in hybrid. Visit the EPA's website for CX-70 fuel economy information.

Mazda SUVs are known for their luxurious materials, sleek styling, and many features, and the CX-70 is no exception. Though it has two rows of seats instead of three and red leather upholstery, its interior looks like the CX-90's. The cargo room should be similar to the CX-90's with the third row folded, although the CX-70 has more underfloor storage.

All CX-90s have i-Activsense driver-assistance technologies like autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring. Visit the NHTSA and IIHS websites for CX-90 crash test results. Key safety features are.
