Rep. James Comer, the House Oversight Committee chairman, invited three of Biden's former business acquaintances, who are currently in legal trouble, last week.
“Your idea of congressional ‘fact-finding’ is, amazingly, to have Mr. Biden appear with the discredited ‘witnesses’ you continue to promote,” Lowell said.
Hunter Biden's activities in Ukraine and China has dominated the committee's 14-month Biden family inquiry. Lawmakers have found unethical activity by the president's son and other family members, but Republicans have not found any public office misbehavior by Joe Biden.
Last year, Hunter Biden and his lawyer requested a public hearing instead of the private deposition because of worry that GOP legislators would misinterpret his interview. The parties agreed to sit-down testimony before a public hearing.
Comer replied that the committee called Hunter Biden's bluff. "Hunter Biden for months said he wanted a public hearing, but now that one has been offered with his longtime business associates, he is refusing to come," the Kentucky Republican added.
But Lowell said his client would only testify for a hearing if it was a “legitimate exercise of congressional authority” that also investigated former President Donald Trump's family's efforts to trade off his brand while in office.
Republican Comer said the March 20 hearing will proceed and Republicans “fully expect Hunter Biden to participate.” He said, “The American people demand the truth and accountability for the Bidens’ corruption.”
