News: 49ers ink free agent linebacker Campbell to one-year deal

It seems that the 49ers have been successful in acquiring the linebacker depth that they had been looking for in free agency.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Friday that San Francisco has agreed to terms with former Green Bay Packers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell for a one-year contract. Richard Rapoport cited a source for his claim. There was no disclosure of the financial terms.

Campbell, who is thirty years old, will most likely line up next to All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner on defense as Dre Greenlaw recovers from a damaged Achilles tendon that he sustained in the 49ers' loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.

Following his release from the Atlanta Falcons, Campbell signed with the Arizona Cardinals for the 2020 NFL season. Campbell was taken by the Falcons in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, which was the 115th overall pick.

He remained with the Falcons for four seasons before being released. After that, Campbell signed a contract with the Packers in 2021 that was for $50 million over five years. However, he was categorized as a post-June 1 cut during this offseason, which allowed him to become a free agency.

Campbell, who was named to the first team of All-Pro Players in 2021, played in 11 games for Green Bay in 2023 before being released

During that time, he collected 75 total tackles, three of which were for loss, one fumble recovery, one pass defensed, and two quarterback hits.

The senior free-agent linebacker Eric Kendricks had an agreement with the 49ers on Wednesday, but later that day, he decided to back out of the arrangement and instead agree to a new contract with the Dallas Cowboys. The deal that has been reported for Campbell comes two days after Kendricks' agreement with another team.
