"Poor Things" wins Emma Stone her second career best actress Oscar, narrowly defeating Lily Gladstone.

Los Angeles — Emma Stone's second best actress Oscar came from "Poor Things," shocking her. She defeated Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon” on Sunday night in a race most commentators called too close. Gladstone would have been the first competitive Oscar-winning Native American.

Stone looked astonished when Michelle Yeoh, last year's winner, announced her name. After hugging and kissing her husband Dave McCary, she hugged co-star Mark Ruffalo and director Yorgos Lanthimos in the aisle. “I think I blacked out,” she stated backstage. “Yes, I was stunned. I still spin a little.” Stone hugged all five best actress winners who introduced the nominations.

Stone was lauded for her portrayal of Bella Baxter, a childlike Victorian London woman who undergoes a brain transplant and discovers herself. The steampunk-themed film is full with grim humor.

It's not about me. Stone remarked onstage that making movies is amazing because a team worked together to create something greater. “I am honored to share this with every cast and crew member. Yorgos, Bella Baxter is a lifetime gift.

Stone told the crowd her garment was broken as she entered the stage, pointing to the back. Repairs were complete when she spoke with media backstage.

“They sewed me back in, which was wonderful,” she said. “I genuinely do think I blew it during ‘I’m Just Ken,’” she remarked of Ryan Gosling's original song nominee. Ryan astonished me and that figure blew my mind.” 13 women have won two best actress awards, including Stone. The love musical “La La Land” was her 2017 debut. She received 2015 and 2019 supporting actress nominations.

For producing “Poor Things,” she was nominated for best picture, losing to “Oppenheimer.” She became the second woman to be nominated for acting and best picture in the same film following Frances McDormand in 2021 for “Nomadland”. Stone and Gladstone traded wins before their Oscar matchup. Gladstone won at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and another Globes category, while Stone won at the BAFTA Film Awards and Golden Globes.

Stone made her star debut in 2010's teen comedy "Easy A." The 35-year-old Scottsdale, Arizona, actor starred in “The Help,” various “Spider-Man” films, “Birdman,” “The Battle of the Sexes,” and “The Favourite.” The other leading actress nominees were Annette Bening for “Nyad,” Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” and Carey Mulligan for “Maestro.”
